    My grand dad was an old school pocket knife whittler, and when i turned 10, he gave me my 1st pocket knife. That was 39 yrs ago! Of course, he taught me to whittle, and been a pocket knife whittler ever since. Over the yrs, I've collected alotta pocket knives, and personally, as of 15 yrs or so, my favorite are 2 bladed pocket knives. Barlows, canoe's, middleman...My grand dad gave me a 3 bladed stockman style, but only ever used 2 of the blades. I only ever use the main blade blade as a general utility cutter, while the small pen blade was my dedicated whittler. I like Rough Rider pocket knives, and got 3 of their whittler knives, including that one. I personally favor the 2 bladed knives better.

    • @CarvingisFun
      @CarvingisFun 11 часов назад

      For whittling, a smaller blade offers more control and ability to add details with than a larger blade. the blade I'm using is 1-3/4 inch long or 4.5cm long. This allows me to have a good amount of control and flexibility for smaller whittling projects.

    Brian: Just ordered a 1 3/4" knife based on your impressions and the blade geometry. I like the single face of the cutting blade. Not a noticable bevel and flat. Seeing as Helvie is not making new blades and Drake takes months to get, this may be a good alternative. I already purchased a Badger State knife and have a few Flexcut knives. Thanks.

    Thank you so much for the information. If you're looking for a good source on wood information I highly recommend wood database, they have an absolutely insane compilation of different woods, so much so that it can sometimes be hard to be exactly sure which wood you're looking for. For example: by mahogany did you mean genuine mahogany or African mahogany? Or perhaps sepele or Philippine mahogany? Another great resource is the book "With the Grain: A Craftsman's Guide to Understanding Wood" by Christian Becksvoort from Lost Art Press for US domestic woods.

      For the gloves, I mainly use dexfit or andanda level 5 slice resistant gloves. They aren't cut proof but they will turn a really bad cut into a minor one. For thumb guards, I just use any self adhering bandage wrap.
